Netflix to Drop Support for 60 Smart TV Models: TVs Affected

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Is your TV about to become a glorified paperweight?

Netflix, the global streaming behemoth, is pulling the plug on support for 60 different smart TV models.

Here’s what you need to know to see if your beloved screen is on the chopping block.

Which TVs Are Affected?

First things first, take a deep breath. If you’ve bought a new TV in the last decade, chances are you’re safe.

This mass exodus primarily targets older TV models, mostly from Sony, that have been around since the early days of streaming.

Think of these models as the streaming equivalent of a Nokia Lumia trying to run the latest smartphone apps—not impossible, but painfully impractical.

The soon-to-be-snubbed devices include several generations of Sony TVs.

Why Is Netflix Ghosting These TVs?

Why is Netflix cutting ties with these older models? As technology advances, older devices struggle to keep up with the latest streaming features.

Just like you wouldn’t try to run the newest apps on an ancient smartphone, these older TVs can’t handle the demands of modern streaming services.

The decision is all about ensuring a seamless viewing experience for Netflix users.

Netflix explained, “As we improve the Netflix experience, we occasionally need to discontinue support for older devices that don’t support our latest capabilities.”

What Can You Do If Your TV Is Affected?

If your TV is on the list, don’t panic. This doesn’t mean your screen is destined for the graveyard. You have a few options:

  1. Upgrade Your Streaming Device: Invest in a new streaming device like a Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, or Apple TV. These devices are relatively affordable and can breathe new life into your older TV.
  2. Consider a New Smart TV: If your TV is seriously outdated, it might be time for an upgrade. Newer smart TVs come with better picture quality, faster processors, and more advanced streaming capabilities.
  3. Explore Other Streaming Services: If you’re not ready to part ways with your old TV, you might want to explore other streaming services that still support older models.

For those still committed to their Netflix relationship, upgrading to a new device or TV can be seen as a health upgrade for your eyes, offering better resolution and overall viewing experience.
