NAIROBI, Kenya- In the wake of a tragic fire that ravaged Nairobi’s Toi Market, claiming four lives and destroying the livelihoods of over 2,000 traders, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has committed to a robust recovery plan.
The Governor’s decisive actions are aimed at not only rebuilding the market but also enhancing security to prevent future disasters.
Governor Sakaja announced that City Hall will construct a perimeter wall around Toi Market to bolster security and protect traders from future incidents.
This move is part of a broader strategy to restore normalcy in the bustling marketplace. “We’ve set aside Sh100 million to kickstart the reconstruction,” Sakaja revealed during a rally at the market on Saturday, demonstrating the county government’s commitment to the speedy recovery of the market.
The construction of the perimeter wall is expected to begin immediately, ensuring that the market is safer for both traders and customers.
This security measure is part of a larger effort to rebuild the market infrastructure, which was severely damaged in the fire.
In addition to the long-term reconstruction efforts, Governor Sakaja has rolled out immediate relief measures for the affected traders.
He announced the donation of 5,000 iron sheets, which will be distributed to help traders rebuild their stalls. This donation is a critical lifeline for many who lost their entire stock in the fire.
Moreover, the Governor declared a three-month waiver on daily market charges. “Due to the fire loss, I have directed that you will not pay daily charges for three months to recover from the loss,” Sakaja stated, recognizing the financial strain that the fire has placed on traders.
This move is designed to ease the burden on traders as they work to rebuild their businesses from the ground up.
As the market begins its journey to recovery, questions remain about the cause of the fire. Preliminary investigations by police suggest that an electric fault may have sparked the blaze, which began around 4 a.m. on August 3rd.
The fire tragically claimed four lives as people attempted to save their property from the rapidly spreading flames.
Governor Sakaja has urged authorities to expedite the investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
As the city rallies around the affected traders, the focus is on both rebuilding the market and ensuring that such a tragedy does not happen again.
