Trouble For Government: More Religious Leaders Express Support For Catholic Bishops

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) has thrown its weight behind the Catholic bishops, amplifying criticism of the government’s handling of key national issues.

The Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya, Dr. Jackson Ole Sapit, issued a strongly worded statement denouncing what he termed as “dishonest” attempts to dismiss the Catholic bishops’ recent critique of the administration.

Dr. Ole Sapit made it clear that the ACK fully aligns with the Catholic bishops’ sentiments, asserting that their message reflects the struggles of ordinary Kenyans.

He decried attacks on the clergy, urging the government to abandon its “culture of impunity” and listen to the concerns being raised.

“The bishops have faithfully spoken the minds of Kenyans and expressed the truth as it is on the ground. No amount of attacks or intimidation will deter the church from calling out evil and speaking truth to power,” read the statement.

The ACK highlighted several pressing issues affecting Kenyans, including the government’s failure to stabilize public universities due to delayed capitation, the chaotic transition from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), and the rise in forced disappearances and unresolved murders.

Dr. Ole Sapit also criticized the government’s handling of evictions and the introduction of what he termed “punitive taxes” in an already fragile economic environment.

The Archbishop called on leaders to focus on delivering services instead of offering “empty promises and lectures.”

He pointed to growing dissatisfaction among Kenyans over issues such as unemployment and the lack of a conducive business environment.

“Let the political class and those in government come down from their high horses and provide meaningful leadership. Too much talk and open-ended promises will not do,” the statement added.

Dr. Ole Sapit’s remarks come at a time when the government faces mounting criticism from religious leaders and civil society groups over its perceived inaction in addressing the challenges affecting millions of citizens.

His statement concluded with a pointed reference to Proverbs 29:2: “When the rulers are good, the people are happy. When the rulers are evil, the people complain.”
