NAIROBI, Kenya- The late Nathan Munoko, a distinguished Cabinet Minister and public servant, is remembered not only for his political acumen but also for his unwavering dedication to child welfare.
Munoko, who passed away on December 19, 2024, at the age of 102, left behind a legacy of compassion and service that continues to inspire.
Munoko’s illustrious political career included roles as a Senator, Member of Parliament, and Cabinet Minister in various ministries, including Cooperatives and Marketing, Housing and Social Services, and Agriculture.
Despite the demands of these high-profile positions, his commitment to children’s welfare remained steadfast.
Since the 1950s, Munoko was a pillar of the Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWSK), serving as its first African National Chairman in 1974.
His leadership saw the establishment of local branches, such as in Bungoma, and innovative fundraising initiatives, including efforts in Isiolo to address the needs of children in arid regions.
“Every child deserves a chance to succeed,” Munoko often said, embodying CWSK’s core values of compassion and empathy. Even in his later years, he actively participated in discussions and inspections, ensuring the organization’s mission stayed on course.
Munoko’s humility was as striking as his accomplishments. When offered a grand celebration for his 100th birthday, he requested that the funds be redirected toward initiatives benefiting children.
His leadership extended to defending CWSK’s integrity, notably standing in court at age 98 to protect the organization’s stability.
Through hands-on involvement, such as inspecting projects at Joska or following Senate discussions on child-related issues, Munoko demonstrated a relentless commitment to making a difference. His actions underscored a lifetime of prioritizing service over recognition.
On December 31, 2024, a memorial service for Nathan Munoko was held at Winners Chapel International Church in Nairobi.
He will be laid to rest on January 4, 2025, in his hometown of Endebbes, Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.
Munoko’s life is a testament to resilience, dedication, and the enduring power of selflessness.
As Kenya reflects on his contributions, his legacy serves as a reminder that true leadership lies in uplifting the most vulnerable among us.
