Countering Violent Extremism: Kenya’s NCTC Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in Kenya celebrated its 20th anniversary, reflecting on two decades of pioneering work in preventing and countering violent extremism across the region.

During the celebrations, former Deputy Director Joseph Opondo highlighted the Center’s achievements, emphasizing its collaborative partnerships with global allies, including the European Union (EU), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF), and UN Women Kenya.

These alliances have played a critical role in strengthening NCTC’s strategies to tackle violent extremism effectively.

He noted that the partnerships they have fostered over the years with different organizations have been instrumental in shaping sustainable and impactful initiatives.

Key milestones include groundbreaking engagements with local stakeholders, such as the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, and the implementation of community-driven programs that focus on strategic communication and economic empowerment.

The Center’s initiatives have spanned regions, addressing both the ideological and socioeconomic roots of extremism.

As NCTC looks to the future, the Center remains committed to its leadership role in safeguarding communities and advancing strategies to counter violent extremism.
