NAIROBI, Kenya – Baringo Senator William Cheptumo has passed away after an illness, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service. 

His death was confirmed on Sunday by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, who described him as a selfless leader committed to the welfare of his people.

Ruto Pays Tribute to a ‘Progressive Leader’

President William Ruto led the nation in mourning Cheptumo, hailing him as a “progressive leader dedicated to public service.” 

The President acknowledged the senator’s relentless efforts to transform Baringo County and improve the lives of his constituents.

“He was vocal, hardworking, and a tireless champion for the transformation of Baringo,” Ruto said, adding that his thoughts and prayers were with Cheptumo’s family, friends, and supporters.

Cheptumo, a staunch ally of the President, had a long political career, serving as Baringo North MP before clinching the Senate seat in 2022 under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), defeating former Senator Gideon Moi.

Senate Speaker Kingi: ‘A Selfless Public Servant’

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi also paid tribute to the late senator, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to representing the people of Baringo. 

Kingi described Cheptumo as a lawmaker who approached his legislative work with “unmatched zeal” and consistently fought for the interests of both his county and the nation.

Cheptumo’s leadership was marked by his ability to navigate complex political landscapes while remaining focused on development and governance issues affecting his constituents.

As Kenya comes to terms with the loss, tributes continue to pour in from political leaders and citizens who admired Cheptumo’s dedication. 

His passing leaves a significant gap in Baringo’s leadership, and his contributions to Kenyan politics will not be forgotten.
