ELDORET, Kenya- The University of Eldoret has instituted disciplinary proceedings against a part-time lecturer over remarks allegedly made during a class.
In a statement, the university said the reported remarks were made on Thursday, September 24, while the lecturer was teaching SHUM 211, State and Society Development, at ED5.
The institution did not identify the lecturer or disclose the specific remarks that triggered the disciplinary process.
“The University of Eldoret Management has taken note of, and strongly condemns, the unfortunate and unacceptable utterances reportedly made by one of its part-time lecturers,” the statement said.
University distances itself from remarks
The university said the lecturer’s reported comments did not represent its official position, policies or views.
It said all employees, including part-time lecturers, were required to observe its policies, Kenyan law and the professional obligations arising from their work at the institution.
“The University upholds the highest standards of professionalism, academic integrity, respect, inclusivity and responsible conduct in the discharge of its mandate,” it said.
Management said immediate disciplinary action had been instituted in accordance with the university’s regulations and principles of due process.
The statement did not indicate whether the lecturer had been suspended, invited to respond to the allegations or removed from the class pending investigations.
University promises due process
The institution said it would take necessary action whenever a staff member’s conduct was found to be inconsistent with its standards.
It also reaffirmed its responsibility to protect the dignity, safety, rights and welfare of its students and employees.
“The University remains committed to the rule of law, institutional accountability, academic professionalism, and the principles of equality and non-discrimination,” the statement said.
The announcement leaves key questions unanswered, including the lecturer’s identity, the exact comments under investigation and the possible disciplinary consequences.
