NYERI, Kenya – The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo, who died while in police custody at Narumoru Police Station in Nyeri County.
IPOA said Osiemo died on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the station in Kieni East Sub-County.
The authority has dispatched investigators to the station to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
Body Taken to Narumoru Mortuary
Following the death, Osiemo’s body was removed from the police station and taken to the Narumoru Level 4 Hospital Mortuary.
IPOA said a post-mortem examination will be conducted in the presence of its investigators and members of the deceased’s family.
The examination is expected to help establish the circumstances and cause of death.
Osiemo Had Been Arrested Over Assault Case
IPOA said preliminary investigations have established that Osiemo had been arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers, with assistance from officers at Keroka Police Station in Nyamira County, on Friday, September 18.
The arrest was in connection with an assault case, according to the oversight authority.
IPOA did not provide further details about the allegations that led to his arrest.
IPOA Launches Custody Death Probe
The authority said it was undertaking other necessary investigative processes in accordance with its mandate.
IPOA acknowledged public concern surrounding the death and said it was committed to establishing the full circumstances surrounding what happened.
“The Authority reaffirms its commitment to investigating the matter promptly, conclusively and impartially,” IPOA said.
The authority said it would provide further updates once the investigation is completed.
Family Receives Condolences
IPOA Chairperson Dr Duncan Ojwang’ Oburu conveyed condolences to Osiemo’s family following his death.
The authority assured the family that the matter was receiving attention and that investigations would proceed independently.
