Former US President Jimmy Carter Dies at 100

Date:

GEORGIA, US – Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and a towering figure in global humanitarian efforts, has passed away at the age of 100, the Carter Center announced.

He died peacefully on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family.

Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, was the longest-lived president in U.S. history.

Known for his unwavering commitment to peace and human rights, his legacy extended far beyond his single term in the White House.

“Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” the Carter Center shared in a statement on social media.

His son, Chip Carter, paid tribute, calling his father a “hero” to those who believe in peace and unselfish love.

Born on October 1, 1924, in the small town of Plains, Georgia, James Earl Carter Jr. rose from humble beginnings.

The eldest of four children, Carter grew up in a family steeped in farming and service.

After excelling as a high school basketball player, he served seven years in the U.S. Navy before returning home to manage his family’s struggling peanut farm following his father’s death.

Through determination and skill, he transformed the business into a success.

As president, Carter faced significant challenges, including an energy crisis, the Iran hostage crisis, and persistent economic troubles.

Despite these struggles, his administration brokered the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, a cornerstone of his foreign policy legacy.

His defeat in the 1980 election by Ronald Reagan marked the beginning of a second act that would define his life.

Post-presidency, Carter dedicated himself to global humanitarian work, from advocating for human rights to eradicating diseases in the developing world. In 2002, his efforts were recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize.

Carter was predeceased by his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away just weeks earlier on November 19, 2023.

The couple’s enduring partnership was a cornerstone of Carter’s life and work. Together, they shared four children—Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy—11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

“My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world,” Chip Carter said, reflecting on his father’s values and global impact.

In recent years, Carter faced health challenges, including melanoma that spread to his liver and brain.

In 2023, he entered hospice care at home, a decision that allowed him to spend his final days in Plains, the town where his journey began.

Carter’s passing marks the end of a life dedicated to service and compassion.
