KNCHR Chairperson Roseline Odede Passes Away After Short Illness

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is mourning the death of its chairperson, Roseline Odhiambo Odede, who passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025, after a brief illness.

KNCHR Vice Chairperson Raymond Nyeris announced her death in a statement on Saturday, expressing the commission’s grief and offering condolences to her family and loved ones.

“It is with shock and deep sorrow that KNCHR informs you all of the demise of Roseline Odhiambo Odede, Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), that happened yesterday, Friday, January 3, 2025, after a short illness,” the statement read.

Nyeris lauded Odede’s exceptional service, describing her as an irreplaceable leader whose contributions will continue to inspire those who worked with her.

“During this period of mourning, we send our message of condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends, and all those who knew Roseline. May the memories of her exceptional service bring comfort and strength in this difficult time,” he said.

Roseline Odede, an Advocate of the High Court, held a distinguished career in the legal and human rights field.

She previously served as the Vice Chairperson of the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board and was nominated to her current role at KNCHR by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Her tenure at KNCHR was marked by her unwavering commitment to advancing human rights in Kenya.

The commission described serving alongside her as “a privilege,” emphasizing her unique leadership qualities.

Odede’s leadership and dedication to justice and equality have left an indelible mark on the nation’s human rights landscape.
