Jubilee Party Vows to Pressure for IEBC Reconstitution

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has vowed to collaborate with other opposition leaders to intensify pressure for the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), expressing fears that delays in the process could jeopardize the upcoming elections.

Kioni raised alarms about the potential risks posed by the postponed reconstitution, emphasizing the urgency of reviewing constituency boundaries.

“The delay has put the country at risk,” he warned, noting that some constituencies are now incapable of holding elections due to inadequate population thresholds.

He accused unnamed individuals of employing delay tactics to hinder the operations of those responsible for managing the electoral process.

Kioni pointed out that two ongoing court cases are obstructing the nomination of nine members to the IEBC selection panel by the President.

Justice Dorah Chepkwony is set to provide directions on January 25 in a case where a petitioner has argued for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the panel.

The announcement was made during a meeting with the Wasupa na Jubilee team, tasked with grassroots recruitment in Murang’a County.

Kioni highlighted plans for post-African Union Commission (AUC) elections protests, contingent on Raila Odinga’s victory.

“A few days after Raila Odinga wins the AUC seat, we will celebrate his win as we demand for the commission to be made operational,” he declared, setting the stage for a nationwide rally to press for action.

Kioni also stressed the importance of appointing IEBC commissioners promptly to allow sufficient preparation time for the election process, cautioning that delays could undermine the commission’s effectiveness.

During the launch of the grassroots initiative, he urged the youth to continue advocating for improved services, positioning them as crucial players in the fight for electoral integrity.
