UDA Seeks to Officially Replace Rigathi Gachagua as Deputy Party Leader

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has officially notified its members and the public of plans to remove former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as the party’s deputy leader.

UDA intends to replace him with his successor, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, pending approval by the Registrar of Political Parties.

This development comes days after UDA announced its merger with the Amani National Congress (ANC), a move that has reshaped the ruling party’s leadership structure.

Gachagua’s removal stems from a November 11 resolution by UDA’s National Executive Committee (NEC), which cited the party constitution’s requirement that the deputy leader must also serve as deputy president.

His impeachment as Deputy President on October 17 over allegations of insubordination to party leader President William Ruto paved the way for Kindiki’s appointment as his replacement.

The former Mathira MP, however, has challenged his impeachment in court.

The case, involving over 30 petitions, is set for mention Thursday before a three-judge bench.

Despite this legal battle, UDA officials have hinted that Gachagua’s continued presence in the party remains untenable, citing a fractured relationship with the president.

Gachagua appears undeterred, with allies confirming that plans to launch his political party are underway.

The new party, reportedly featuring blue as one of its corporate colors, is set to be unveiled in early February as Gachagua positions himself for the 2027 General Election.

Meanwhile, UDA has embarked on a comprehensive rebranding effort following its merger with the ANC on January 17.

Former ANC leader Issa Timamy has been named UDA’s second deputy party leader, while Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba assumes the role of deputy secretary general under Hassan Omar.

Other notable appointments include Kevin Lunani as vice chairperson, Kitutu Chache North MP Japheth Nyakundi as national treasurer, and Nicodemus Bore as one of three former ANC officials joining the UDA Board of Directors.

The merger has also introduced elements of ANC’s identity into UDA’s logo and branding as the ruling party prepares for the 2027 polls.

UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire affirmed the party’s commitment to expanding its national presence.

Speaking after his installation as UDA deputy leader, Kindiki emphasized the importance of unity in the party and the country.

“I will consult and promote UDA’s ideals of uniting the country as I support the president in running this outfit,” he said during a ceremony at UDA’s Hustler Plaza headquarters.
