US Embassy in Kinshasa Reduces Staff, Urges American Citizens to Leave DRC

Date:

KINSHASA, DRC – The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa is scaling back its operations, further reducing the number of American personnel amid escalating security concerns in the country.

In an advisory issued Monday, the Embassy urged all U.S. citizens in the DRC to leave “immediately” using commercial travel options while they remain available.

According to the statement, border crossings are open, and flights continue to depart from N’Djili International Airport in Kinshasa.

Routine consular services, including visa interviews, have been suspended due to the security situation. The Embassy also warned that it would have limited capacity to assist citizens who choose to remain.

Security Concerns Prompt Urgent Departure Advisory

Though the advisory does not specify the exact nature of the security risks, the move signals increasing instability in Kinshasa.

The U.S. government has previously raised concerns about political tensions, armed conflict in parts of the country, and the potential for civil unrest.

Americans in the DRC are advised to review personal security plans, stock up on essential supplies, and be prepared for disruptions.

The Embassy stressed that individuals should not rely on U.S. government assistance for evacuation and should take advantage of commercial transportation while still feasible.

Emergency Contacts and Travel Guidance

U.S. citizens in need of emergency assistance can contact the Embassy’s Consular Section at +243 81-556-0151/0152 or +243-972-616-193 (after hours).

Travelers are also encouraged to enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time security updates.

The Embassy advised all Americans to remain alert, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and keep a low profile.

It also recommended that travelers ensure their documents are in order and pack essential items in case of a rapid departure.
