God of a Second Chance: Woman Shamed For Asking Rent To Own Ruto’s Affordable House

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – A woman who was publicly shamed for seeking help to pay rent is now set to own a home through the government’s Affordable Housing program.

Milka Moraa, once the subject of online debate after a humiliating encounter with televangelist Pastor James Ng’ang’a, has secured a unit in the newly completed Mukuru Affordable Housing Project in Nairobi.

Moraa’s struggles first gained national attention after a video of her plea for assistance went viral.

Desperate and locked out of her house over unpaid rent, she turned to Pastor Ng’ang’a for help.

Instead of receiving aid, she was met with harsh words, as the preacher dismissed her and suggested she should apply for an affordable house if she could not afford her rent.

The incident sparked widespread condemnation, but it also galvanized goodwill from well-wishers, including police officer Sammy Ondimu Ngare.

Through a public fundraising effort, Ksh392,000 was raised to help Moraa stabilize her life.

With further support from authorities, she successfully secured a unit in the government’s affordable housing program.

Moraa will soon move into her new studio apartment, valued at Ksh640,000.

Under the rent-to-own scheme, she will make monthly payments of Ksh3,900 until she fully owns the home.

The housing project promises modern amenities, including clean water, articulated gas, an automated elevator, and an in-compound school for her children.

Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Public Works, Housing & Urban Development, Alice Wahome, met with Moraa at Ardhi House, affirming the government’s commitment to accessible homeownership.

In a statement on X, Wahome praised Moraa’s resilience and encouraged Kenyans to take advantage of the Affordable Housing Program.

“I must also recognise Pastor Ng’ang’a for directing Milka to Affordable Housing. Asante sana,” Wahome remarked, adding an ironic nod to the pastor whose dismissive remarks ultimately led to Moraa’s fresh start.

The Mukuru housing units are set to be officially opened in two months by President William Ruto, marking a new chapter for Moraa and thousands of other beneficiaries.
