MACHAKOS, Kenya – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged ODM leader Raila Odinga to abandon President William Ruto’s camp and join forces with him ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking at the Gospel Confirmation Center in Machakos, Gachagua likened Raila to Ruto’s “life support,” suggesting that the president’s political survival hinges entirely on the opposition leader’s support.
“The President’s current life support is Raila Odinga. If we switch it off, it will be the end,” Gachagua said.
His remarks come amid growing speculation about shifting political alliances as the next election cycle looms.
Gachagua, who has emerged as a vocal critic of Ruto since their fallout, dismissed claims of desperation, insisting that his camp has the numbers to unseat the president with or without Raila’s backing.
“If the mzee (Raila) and Ruto want to team up, there is no problem. Our journey is unstoppable with or without him,” he asserted. “We are not desperate for his participation. The numbers are good, and it will be an easy job.”
His comments were echoed by Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, who warned Raila against trusting Ruto.
Nyutu pointed to Gachagua’s political trajectory as a cautionary tale, referencing his fallout with Ruto and subsequent impeachment despite delivering millions of votes in the 2022 election.
“If Ruto could impeach Gachagua after he brought him 5 million votes, what about Raila?” Nyutu questioned.
Nyutu emphasized that their mission to unseat Ruto remains unwavering, regardless of Raila’s decision.
“Whether Raila joins us or not, that is okay, but one thing we have decided is we must take Ruto home,” he declared.
With Gachagua positioning himself as a formidable force against Ruto, the coming months are likely to see intensified pushing for alliances and voter support.
Raila, a veteran political strategist, now faces a critical decision: whether to align with Gachagua’s camp, stick with Ruto, or chart an independent path.
