Zelenskyy Signals Willingness to Work with Trump on Ending War with Russia

Date:

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to ending the war with Russia, expressing a willingness to negotiate “as soon as possible” while calling for U.S. President Donald Trump’s leadership in securing a lasting peace.

In a statement posted on his official X account, Zelenskyy emphasized that “none of us wants an endless war” and stressed that Ukraine is prepared to “work fast to end the war,” provided that Russia reciprocates.

His remarks come amid ongoing uncertainty over U.S. support and the future of Ukraine’s security agreements.

Zelenskyy outlined potential initial steps toward peace, including a prisoner exchange, a ceasefire in the air to halt missile and drone strikes on civilian infrastructure, and a maritime truce.

However, he made clear that such measures would only be possible if Russia agreed to the same terms.

The Ukrainian leader also acknowledged America’s past contributions to Ukraine’s defense, notably mentioning Trump’s previous decision to supply Javelin anti-tank missiles.

This direct reference to the former president is likely an effort to engage Trump, who remains a key political figure in the U.S. and has at times expressed skepticism about continued aid to Kyiv.

Zelenskyy’s statement also touched on recent diplomatic tensions. Referring to his White House meeting on Friday, he described it as not going “the way it was supposed to” and called for a reset in communication between Ukraine and the U.S.

“It is time to make things right,” he said, signaling a desire for more constructive engagement moving forward.

Additionally, he reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness to sign an agreement on security and mineral resources at any time and in any format, portraying the deal as an important step toward greater security guarantees.

The statement comes at a crucial moment for Ukraine, as it seeks continued Western support while facing an entrenched Russian invasion.

With a U.S. presidential election on the horizon, Zelenskyy’s remarks appear to acknowledge the shifting political landscape and the need to maintain strong ties with American leaders—past, present, and future.
