Gachagua Claims Bomas of Kenya, Prison Lands Sold to Turkish Investor

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya—Kenya’s former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is making waves again, this time with explosive claims that the historic Bomas of Kenya has been sold to a Turkish national.

According to Gachagua, the deal was greenlit by the Cabinet despite objections from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), raising alarm over the fate of the national heritage site.

But that’s not all—he’s also alleging that prison lands across the country have been auctioned off, forcing relocations of correctional facilities and even churches built on them.

These accusations come just days after President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga struck a political pact, adding another layer of tension to Kenya’s shifting political landscape.

Bomas of Kenya: A National Treasure at Risk?

If true, this would be a monumental shake-up. The Bomas of Kenya, established in 1971, is more than just a tourist attraction—it’s a cultural cornerstone meant to preserve Kenya’s ethnic diversity.

Gachagua insists he was the only Cabinet member to oppose the sale, claiming: “The Cabinet was informed, and I was the only one who opposed it. I stood firm and said this is a national heritage; we cannot sell it.”

Adding fuel to the fire, he alleges that KCAA opposed the sale due to the site’s proximity to a flight path, but the government went ahead with it anyway. “The people from civil aviation opposed it, but the President went ahead and sold it. We are on our own.”

Prison Lands Sold Off?

The former Deputy President didn’t stop at Bomas. He went further, alleging a massive land sell-off that includes prison facilities nationwide.

If true, this would mean forced relocations of correctional facilities and even demolitions of churches built on those lands. “All prison lands have been sold. All prisons need to be relocated. Even churches built on these lands, including Catholic and SDA churches, will be demolished,” he warned.

These claims, if substantiated, could signal a huge national scandal—but for now, they remain just that: claims.

Politics in Overdrive: The Ruto-Odinga Deal Sparks Division

Meanwhile, Kenya’s political scene is going through yet another shake-up. Just days ago, President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga signed a 10-point political pact, aiming to create a National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report implementation plan.

The agreement suggests reviving the Prime Minister’s position and establishing the Office of the Official Opposition Leader—a move that has critics crying foul.

Gachagua is having none of it. “Do not be concerned about what is happening. It is a distraction. They are called theatrics, meant to divert our focus. Politics is a game of numbers, and I assure you, the numbers are good.”

And he’s not alone. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has also voiced his disappointment, calling it a betrayal by Raila Odinga.

DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa went a step further, suggesting the Prime Minister’s role was revived purely for Odinga’s benefit.

But ODM’s acting leader Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o isn’t backing down, urging critics to actually read the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) before jumping to conclusions.

“Kalonzo could acquaint himself better in the court of conscience if he reads the content of the MoU before condemning its signing by the two parties.”

So where does this all leave us? Between Gachagua’s bombshell allegations, the uncertainty over Bomas of Kenya, and the Ruto-Odinga handshake drama, Kenya’s political stage is more charged than ever.
