Court Operations Suspended in Eldoret Following Destruction by Protestors

Date:

ELDORET, Kenya – The Judiciary has temporarily suspended all court operations in Eldoret after protestors razed a county court on Tuesday, leading to significant damage and loss of important documents.

Deputy Registrar of the Court of Appeal in the region, Cheronoh Maurine Kesse, reported that the courthouse lost all files, computers, and other essential documents in the destruction.

The decision to halt operations was made to ensure the safety of judiciary staff amid ongoing security concerns.

Kesse detailed the extensive damage, noting that the High Court, located adjacent to the National Library, also faced severe destruction and looting during the protests.

The situation necessitated the evacuation of judges and court staff using ambulances to ensure their safety.

Despite the challenges, Kesse reassured the public and court users that efforts are underway to resume operations as swiftly as possible.

“We regret the interruption of services at the courts but will ensure we resume shortly,” she stated, adding that the reconstruction of lost files is already in progress.

Kesse expressed hope that court operations might resume by Friday, depending on the evolving situation.

“The loss at the court was heavy, but it is possible to reconstruct the files that were destroyed,” she said.
