UNCTAD Chief Highlights Importance of Multilateralism In Tackling Global Challenges

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Collective commitment to multilateralism is crucial for tackling global challenges and fostering inclusive development.

That was the key message from UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) chief Rebeca Grynspan at an event marking the 60th anniversary of the International Trade Centre (ITC).

Held on Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day, the event featured high-level speakers including UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, ITC Executive Director Pamela Coke-Hamilton, WTO Deputy Director-General Xiangchen Zhang, and African Union Commissioner for Trade and Industry Albert Muchanga.

Rebeca Grynspan emphasized the shared history and common vision of ITC, UNCTAD, and the World Trade Organization (WTO)

Created in 1964, ITC supports small businesses in developing countries to participate effectively in global trade.

Grynspan highlighted that the three organizations are united in their commitment to multilateralism, inclusive growth, and an equitable international economic system.

Joint Efforts for Shared Prosperity

For decades, UNCTAD has collaborated with ITC and WTO to promote economic growth, empower communities, and build economic resilience in developing countries. This synergy has resulted in several key initiatives:

  • eTrade Readiness Assessments: These assessments and e-commerce strategies boost digital capabilities in the least developed countries.
  • Global Trade Helpdesk: Established by ITC, WTO, and UNCTAD, this tool provides MSMEs with a single window for trade information, equipping them to navigate international trade.
  • World Tariff Profiles: Released annually since 2007, this resource offers comprehensive data on tariffs, with contributions from ITC, WTO, and UNCTAD.

The collaboration also includes the United Nations Forum on Sustainability Standards, advancing a just energy transition globally while creating growth opportunities in developing countries.

Grynspan’s address underscored the importance of multilateralism and collaboration in achieving sustainable and inclusive growth.

The event served as a reminder of the collective efforts needed to address global challenges and support small businesses worldwide.
