How to Apply for a Death Certificate in Kenya

Date:

A death certificate is a document issued by the government civil registration office declaring the date, location, and cause of a person’s death.

It is applied by the deceased’s relatives, insurance companies, estate administrators, or employers.

Application for a death certificate is done at any Huduma Centre Countrywide or any Civil Registration office.

A death certificate is important for various reasons including allowing one to arrange for a funeral, settle estates, access pension benefits, claim life insurance, and get married in case a widow or a widower needs to prove that their previous partner is dead.

Requirements when Applying for a Death Certificate

When applying for a death certificate, you need the following;

  • Notification of death or burial permit.
  • The deceased’s national identity card.
  • Duly completed form D4 – application for the death certificate.
  • Knowledge of the date of death in case there is no burial permit or notification of death.

Application of a death certificate with no amendments is charged Sh 50 while a death certificate with amendments is charged Sh 130.

After applying for the death certificate, the applicant should wait for 2 days to receive the certificate.

For any inquiries, contact the Huduma Contact Centre at +254 (020) 6900020 or visit the nearest Huduma Centre.
