Who is Professor Kithure Kindiki?

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has nominated Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Professor Kithure Kindiki as the next Deputy President, following the Senate’s impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Kindiki, a soft-spoken public servant, brings to the role a wealth of experience spanning public administration, lawmaking, governance, and constitutional affairs, both in Kenya and on the international stage.

Born in 1972, Kindiki’s academic and professional journey reflects his deep-rooted commitment to law and governance.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Moi University, a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law, and a Master of Laws and Doctorate in International Law from the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

Before venturing into politics, Kindiki built a distinguished academic career.

Starting as an Assistant Lecturer at Moi University, he later rose to become a Lecturer at the University of Nairobi, where he served as Head of the Department of Public Law at the age of 33.

By the time he was 35, he was already Associate Dean, and soon after, he became an Associate Professor of Law at Kenyatta University.

During his academic career, he authored 35 scholarly works, including books, book chapters, and peer-reviewed articles.

He is also a member of several prestigious legal bodies, including the International Commission of Jurists and the Law Society of Kenya.

In 2013, Kindiki transitioned to politics, serving as Senator for Tharaka Nithi County.

His leadership was quickly recognized, and he was appointed Senate Majority Leader, where he led the legislative agenda for the Majority Party.

He later served as Senate Deputy Speaker, overseeing crucial parliamentary processes and governance matters affecting Kenya’s devolved units.

Kindiki’s tenure as Interior Cabinet Secretary, which began in 2022, has been marked by significant reforms.

He modernized police equipment, introduced a strategic framework for police reforms, and abolished the cumbersome vetting process for obtaining national identification cards.

He also ensured the recognition of stateless communities by granting them citizenship, oversaw the implementation of the Public Benefit Organizations Act, and intensified efforts to combat banditry.

Additionally, Kindiki has pushed for a legislative amendment to formally recognize village elders and enrolled over 13,000 inmates into formal education programs.

These initiatives have earned him a reputation as a diligent reformer dedicated to enhancing public service and security in Kenya.
