Kenyan Marine Commando Unit Completes Thrilling Training with UK Royal Marines

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The Kenyan Marine Commando Unit (KMCU) has recently engaged in high-intensity training exercises conducted by the UK Royal Marines, marking a significant milestone in the enduring security partnership between Kenya and the United Kingdom.

The training coincided with the visit of HMS Lancaster, a British Royal Navy Frigate, to Kenya, reinforcing the commitment of both nations to regional stability and security.

Royal Marines from the 42 Commando unit led the training sessions, delivering practical demonstrations and guiding the Kenyan Marines through challenging visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) exercises.

These tactics are crucial in countering piracy, terrorism, and smuggling activities, adding a vital layer of capability to the KMCU’s operational repertoire.

“This training adds serious value to the Kenyan Marines program,” said British High Commissioner to Kenya, Neil Wigan.

“It’s a great example of how our security partnership is making a real difference to Kenya’s military capacity and capability. Together, we’re making Kenya, the UK, and the region safer and more secure.”

The KMCU’s formation is part of a comprehensive five-year partnership between the UK and Kenya, aimed at establishing a self-sustaining training cycle.

This initiative ensures that the Kenyan Navy can independently train their Marine Commandos, building a formidable force equipped to tackle regional security challenges.

The KMCU made history in May 2023 when the first cohort of Kenyan Marines completed a rigorous training program, mirroring the demanding standards of the Royal Marines.

Commander Chris Sharp of the Royal Navy, Commanding Officer of HMS Lancaster, highlighted the significance of the collaboration.

“HMS Lancaster’s visit to Kenya is a fantastic opportunity for Lancaster’s Royal Marines to train and exercise boarding operations with the Kenyan Marine Commando Unit. This contributes to the UK and Kenya’s joint commitment to improving regional stability and security.”

The US Military has also played an integral role in the development of the KMCU, ensuring that the unit is equipped to the highest standard. This collaboration underscores the international support Kenya receives in building a robust defense force capable of maintaining peace and security.

HMS Lancaster’s visit to the Port of Mombasa was a strategic operational break from its patrols as part of Combined Task Force 150.

The vessel has been active in conducting drug busts and other maritime security operations in the Gulf region.

The visit provided a unique opportunity to demonstrate the close, historic relationship between the UK and Kenyan Armed Forces.

The UK-Kenya Strategic Partnership is an ambitious five-year agreement delivering mutual benefits and enhancing the safety of both nations’ citizens.

This partnership is underpinned by the Defence Cooperation Agreement, which provides the framework for ongoing training programs like that of the KMCU.

As Kenya continues to strengthen its military capabilities, the successful collaboration with international partners like the UK and the US ensures that the KMCU is well-prepared to face future security challenges.

This joint effort not only fortifies Kenya’s defense but also contributes significantly to the stability and security of the broader region.
