Tana River Senator Files Censure Motion Against Deputy President Gachagua

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has filed a censure motion in the Senate, calling for a formal discussion on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s conduct, which he claims violates the constitutional requirements for a state officer.

Addressing the media on Monday, Mungatana accused Gachagua of failing to uphold his oath of office and disregarding provisions outlined in the Leadership and Integrity Act.

Mungatana cited Article 260 of the Constitution, which designates the deputy president as a state officer and subjects his conduct to Article 75 of the Constitution.

According to the senator, Gachagua’s public behavior has undermined the integrity of the office he holds.

“Since assuming office, DP Gachagua has made statements that continue to fuel ethnic divisions and create tensions in the country,” Mungatana stated, pointing to Gachagua’s remarks on public service employment, resource allocation, and incitement against certain county governments as examples of misconduct.

The senator argued that these utterances amount to a violation of the constitution, particularly Article 75, which governs the conduct of state officers.

“His actions have marginalized sections of the population and disrespected lawful directives,” Mungatana added.

The motion, filed under Senate Standing Order 101, seeks to express the Senate’s disapproval of Gachagua’s behavior, with Mungatana urging lawmakers to formally censure the deputy president.

This development comes amid growing speculation of a deepening rift between Gachagua and President William Ruto.

Reports have emerged suggesting that Gachagua feels sidelined by figures within Ruto’s inner circle, further fueling tensions within the administration.

While Gachagua has publicly expressed frustration, President Ruto has yet to comment on the matter.
