Parliament Approves Kithure Kindiki’s Appointment As Deputy President; Set to be Sworn In

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Members of Parliament, in a special parliamentary sitting, have approved Prof. Kithure Kindiki as Deputy President.

236 members of the National Assembly voted in favor of Kindiki’s confirmation, with no abstentions or opposing votes.

This marks a pivotal moment for the country’s leadership as Kindiki steps into one of the highest offices in the land.

Kindiki’s approval by parliament moved quickly, with a unanimous vote from the National Assembly on Friday.

Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who oversaw the proceedings, emphasized the smooth process. “The nomination is herewith declared passed by the House, and the Speaker will transmit the result to the president,” he said.

The next steps involve President Ruto officially appointing Kindiki, who will then wait for a date for his swearing-in ceremony.

Currently serving as the Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary, Kindiki’s nomination came as no surprise.

His name was submitted to the National Assembly by President Ruto earlier on Friday, signaling a smooth transition into his new role as the president’s principal assistant.

One of the key concerns raised during the confirmation process was whether Kindiki’s nomination could be approved the same day it was submitted.

Some MPs questioned the legality of bypassing public participation, a common practice for significant appointments. However, Speaker Wetang’ula clarified that the process adhered strictly to constitutional guidelines.

“The nomination and voting of Kithure Kindiki on the same day is within the constitutional timeline provided for in the constitution,” Wetang’ula explained.

He further elaborated that, unlike other nominations, the Deputy President’s role does not require public participation, much like the election of the Speaker or Deputy Speaker in Parliament.

With Kindiki’s nomination confirmed, all eyes are now on the president as he prepares to appoint him officially.

After his swearing-in, Kindiki will assume his duties as Deputy President, solidifying his role as a key figure in President Ruto’s administration.

The decision represents a significant political moment for Kenya, as Kindiki takes on the responsibilities that come with being the president’s right-hand man.
