NAIROBI, Kenya- The COP29 Presidency has published the final texts of nine Declarations and Pledges, outlining ambitious pathways for global collaboration on climate action.
These documents, forming a crucial part of the Action Agenda for the upcoming UN climate summit in Baku this November, offer governments and stakeholders new avenues to tackle the climate crisis, beyond the formal UNFCCC negotiation process.
In the lead-up to COP29, these Declarations and Pledges represent a broad-based effort to accelerate climate action across multiple sectors of society.
While they won’t be a formal part of the UNFCCC negotiations, they offer something just as powerful: a framework for enhanced climate ambition, with sector-specific targets that stakeholders can integrate into their national climate plans.
The finalized texts include a variety of initiatives such as the COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge, the COP29 Hydrogen Declaration, and the COP29 Declaration on Reducing Methane from Organic Waste.
These initiatives, developed through public consultation, aim to strengthen global collaboration and send strong market signals, encouraging financial flows toward greener technologies.
One of the standout initiatives, the COP29 Truce Appeal, calls for a pause in conflicts during the summit to reduce military emissions and promote global peace.
This particular appeal has already received overwhelming support, with backing from 127 countries and nearly 1,100 non-state actors.
Now that the final texts are available, the COP29 Presidency is urging governments and non-state actors alike to review and endorse these initiatives ahead of the November summit.
According to Mukhtar Babayev, COP29’s President-Designate, these declarations are more than just policy proposals. They’re essential tools for accelerating progress toward the Paris Agreement goals.
“These Declarations and Pledges send strong market signals, guide financial flows, and encourage shared responsibility,” Babayev stated.
While the Declarations and Pledges serve as crucial tools for climate action, they also underscore a broader theme: inclusivity.
The final texts reflect valuable input from a diverse range of stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of transparency in the fight against climate change.
