The Supreme Court of Kenya is marking its 12th anniversary with a three-day conference, reflecting on its impact and legacy.
This inaugural event, themed “Reflecting and Introspecting on the Supreme Court of Kenya’s Jurisprudence,” brings together leaders, legal minds, and citizens to examine the court’s role and responsibilities in shaping Kenya’s legal landscape.
The conference, which began Monday and concludes Wednesday, will wrap up with Chief Justice Emeritus Dr. Willy Mutunga presiding over the closing ceremony
In his opening address, President William Ruto encouraged the Judiciary to practice restraint in matters of national and public interest, urging the court to prioritize policies over personality-driven politics.
He argued that the Judiciary has a crucial role in helping the nation overcome divisive political issues, emphasizing that Kenya should focus on policy-driven governance that aligns with citizens’ needs and aspirations.
“Judiciary plays a unique role in guarding our democracy against personalities and populism,” said President Ruto.
He highlighted that respecting the people’s mandate and the government’s manifesto, which is endorsed by voters, is critical in a functioning democracy.
He questioned how the Judiciary can address challenges brought by individuals or groups against government policies that have received public support.
Chief Justice Martha Koome, the President of the Supreme Court, affirmed the court’s enduring dedication to upholding the rule of law.
In her speech, CJ Koome reassured Kenyans that the Supreme Court would remain a steadfast guardian of constitutional principles.
As Kenya continues to evolve, she underscored the court’s commitment to remaining a beacon of justice and a defender of constitutional values.
“As we celebrate 12 years, our journey forward demands renewed vigor and unity of purpose,” Koome stated.
“The Supreme Court will stand rock solid as a constant guardian of the Constitution and the rule of law in changing times,” she added.
As this milestone event comes to a close, attendees and leaders alike are left contemplating the Supreme Court’s next steps in Kenya’s legal journey.
With a commitment to justice, constitutionalism, and the rule of law, the court is poised to continue influencing the nation’s governance.
From promoting issue-based politics to protecting citizens’ rights, the Supreme Court remains at the forefront of Kenya’s legal evolution.
