Kenya Airways Expands Fleet with Boeing 737-800, Eyes Growth and Efficiency

NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya Airways (KQ) is making power moves in the aviation industry, strengthening its fleet with the addition of a Boeing 737-800, bringing its total number of aircraft to 35. 

The newly acquired jet, leased from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE), comes with a 170-passenger capacity, a boost that aligns with the airline’s commitment to offering more travel flexibility and improving operational efficiency.

With global supply chain constraints impacting aircraft availability, KQ’s ability to secure this addition signals a strategic win in an increasingly competitive space.

KQ Managing Director Allan Kilavuka emphasized that the new aircraft plays a key role in Project Kifaru 2, the airline’s long-term turnaround strategy. 

“The addition of this B737-800 marks a pivotal moment in our fleet expansion journey. It increases our seat capacity and demonstrates our ability to adapt and grow in a challenging operating environment,” Kilavuka noted in a statement.

Beyond just adding more seats, the move is part of a broader push to enhance connectivity and customer experience, ensuring KQ remains a key player in regional and international travel.

What’s Next for KQ?

Kenya Airways is in advanced talks to secure additional aircraft, exploring both narrow and wide-body models that offer greater efficiency and capacity. 

The focus remains on strategic partnerships with top-tier aircraft manufacturers and lessors to maintain a modern, high-performing fleet.

Kilavuka further reinforced KQ’s vision, stating, “The acquisition of the B737-800 from DAE is a great milestone in our long-term partnership. It solidifies our relationship and signals to the aviation industry that Kenya Airways is a reliable and forward-thinking partner.”

With this latest fleet expansion, Kenya Airways is positioning itself for sustained growth while ensuring passengers benefit from increased travel options.
