NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya Power and Lighting Company Plc has announced support for a global electric vehicle expedition as German adventurer Rainer Zietlow transits through the country in a bid to set a new world record.
Zietlow is attempting to enter the Guinness World Records for visiting the highest number of countries in a single journey using a fully electric vehicle. His expedition, dubbed the “ID Buzz World Tour,” spans more than 75 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas.
Kenya Power said it will provide charging support at its EV infrastructure points, including the Stima Plaza charging station in Nairobi and a newly installed charger in Voi. The utility described the partnership as a demonstration of Kenya’s growing readiness to support electric mobility.
So far, Zietlow has covered over 60,000 kilometres, with a target of exceeding 80,000 kilometres by the end of the journey. His passage through Kenya highlights the role of expanding charging networks in enabling long-distance, zero-emission travel.
The company said the initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote clean energy transport solutions, leveraging Kenya’s largely renewable electricity mix. By supporting such high-profile expeditions, Kenya Power aims to showcase the viability of electric vehicles in diverse terrains and climates.
Kenya’s participation in the global EV movement is increasingly tied to its energy profile, where geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar sources contribute significantly to the grid. This positions the country as a potential leader in sustainable transport within the region.

Kenya Power described Zietlow’s journey as more than a record attempt, framing it as a statement on the future of mobility. “It’s a powerful statement that electric mobility knows no limits,” the company said.
