NAIROBI, Kenya- Over 2,000 residents in Murang’a County have benefitted from a free medical camp organized by the M-PESA Foundation in partnership with Zuri Health and Amref.
Held at Kigumo Sub County Hospital, the event focused on delivering specialized healthcare services, including cancer screenings, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The medical camp marked the third cancer-themed event hosted by the foundation, as it continues to raise awareness about early cancer detection.
Beyond screenings, the Foundation distributed 50 mama packs containing essential items for mothers and babies at Longisa County Referral Hospital in Bomet, emphasizing its ongoing commitment to maternal and child health.
As the world observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, M-PESA Foundation is stepping up its efforts to promote the importance of early cancer detection.
According to Patricia Ithau, Trustee of the M-PESA Foundation, the camp’s primary goal is to encourage early screenings for better treatment outcomes.
“We aim to raise as much awareness as possible on the importance of early cancer screenings for better chances at treatment,” Ithau said.
The focus on preventive care highlights the importance of addressing cancer at its earliest stages.
In a further commitment to patient care, the foundation is offering free one-year medical coverage for up to 20 patients diagnosed at each camp, ensuring access to essential treatment and follow-up care.
The medical camp is part of a larger initiative funded by the M-PESA Foundation, which has invested KES 36 million in cancer-themed medical camps across four counties.
These camps aim to provide crucial healthcare services to underserved areas. The first two camps were held in Nairobi and Taita Taveta Counties, where over 6,500 patients received treatment. As part of this effort, the next camp will take place in Homa Bay County .
Partners like Zuri Health and Lion’s Sightfirst Eye Hospital played an essential role in delivering other healthcare services like: eye care consultations, fistula screening, general doctor consultations, and monitoring for conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
The M-PESA Foundation’s ongoing efforts to improve access to healthcare in rural areas continue to make a significant impact.
By offering specialized services such as cancer screenings and partnering with local health institutions, the foundation is not only addressing immediate health concerns but also providing long-term support through initiatives like telemedicine and extended medical coverage.
This initiative represents a powerful step forward in Kenya’s fight against cancer and other prevalent health conditions, showing how collaboration between private organizations and public institutions can create lasting change.
