M-PESA Hits 34 Million Customers in Kenya, Reinforces Digital Financial Leadership

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya’s mobile money powerhouse, M-PESA, has reached a monumental milestone: 34 million active customers as of November 2024.

Safaricom, the leading telco behind the platform, celebrated the achievement, highlighting its role as a catalyst for financial inclusion and economic growth across the country.

“This milestone reflects the trust of our customers and fuels our commitment to providing frictionless, secure, and innovative financial solutions,” remarked Safaricom CEO, Dr. Peter Ndegwa.

As M-PESA nears its 18th anniversary in March 2025, it continues to evolve, transcending basic transactions to become a comprehensive financial ecosystem.

From credit and savings to insurance and wealth management, M-PESA remains at the forefront of Kenya’s digital economy.

At its core, M-PESA’s success stems from its unmatched reach. With over 300,000 agents spread across Kenya, the platform ensures even remote communities can access essential financial services.

This accessibility has made M-PESA a cornerstone of the country’s economic landscape, empowering millions of individuals and businesses alike.

The platform also supports more than 1.5 million enterprises, ranging from small businesses to large corporations. Merchant payment solutions, combined with strategic initiatives like insurance offerings, have cemented M-PESA as an indispensable tool for business growth. Safaricom’s recent acquisition of an insurance intermediary license has further strengthened its commitment to comprehensive financial wellness.

M-PESA’s continued success isn’t just about scale—it’s about innovation. Through its Daraja API platform, businesses can seamlessly integrate payment solutions into websites, apps, and point-of-sale systems.

This initiative has spurred the growth of a vibrant developer community, now over 90,000 strong, supporting more than 40,000 integrations.

Adding to its suite of solutions, M-PESA introduced M-PESA Ratiba, a groundbreaking standing order feature. Launched in October 2024, the service garnered over 1 million opt-ins and facilitated 260,000 transactions in just its first month, reflecting its instant appeal to users.

With 34 million customers and counting, M-PESA remains a symbol of financial empowerment and innovation in Kenya. As Safaricom continues to enhance its offerings, the platform is poised to lead the next wave of digital financial transformation in Africa and beyond.
