NAIROBI, Kenya -Industrialization Principal Secretary Dr Juma Mukhwana has welcomed the appointment of Dr. Alice Kande as the Director General of Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA).
In statement, Dr. Mukhwana said the appointment of Dr Kande is testimony that she is up to the task at the Authority.
Dr Kande becomes the second Director General of the Authority and replaces Dr. Mukhwana who was appointed Principal Secretary in 2022 by President William Ruto. dr Mukhwana was the first Director General after his appointment in 2018 by then Education cabinet Secretary Ms. Amina Mohamed.
“The KNQA was last week awarded by HE William Ruto as the best managed public entity after getting three unqualified audited accounts by the Office of the Auditor General in 3 years. That is what mentorship and leadership is all about,” said Dr Mukhwana.
He went on: “ In 2018, I found the KNQA is a sad state, and in 3 years, we build a formidable international qualifications framework.”
Dr Kande has been instrumental in development of various national policies at the Authority among them the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy that was launched in March this year by Deputy President Hon. Rigathi Gachagua. Other national policies under development are Kenya credit and accumulation transfer systems (KCATS) and registration and accreditation policy framework.
While making the announcement on Monday, KNQA Council Chairman Mr Stanley Kiptis expressed confidence in her leadership and assured her of Council support in steering the organization forward.
Dr Kande on her part appreciated the role the Council and Staff in making the Authority a formidable institution.
“We will continue to work together with all relevant stakeholders in order to come up with more national policies as mandated by our Act,” said Dr. Kande.
Last week, the Authority was feted by President Ruto with Wage Bill Accountability Award.
KNQA was awarded for maintaining parameters that have been set by Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) during its third national wage bill conference at the Bomas of Kenya and which included; wage bill not being more than 35 percent ration of revenue ration for three years consecutive years, demonstrated improvement on reduction of wage bill , it has unqualified audit opinions for the last three years consecutive from the Auditor General and it has place productivity mainstreaming measures in place.
In his remarks, President Ruto commended institutions for having won the wage bill accountability awards for setting a worthy example for the rest of our public sector.
