NAIROBI, Kenya- Safaricom has unveiled a comprehensive plan to support Kenyans affected by the recent unrest as well as bolster the nation’s healthcare infrastructure.
Speaking at Kenyatta National Hospital, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa announced a substantial donation of Sh50 million to those affected.
This donation underscores the company’s commitment to standing with the people during times of need.
Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations made an immediate impact with a Sh15 million donation to Kenyatta National Hospital.
Of this, Sh10 million is earmarked for the hospital’s Disaster Response Centre, and Sh5 million is directed towards aiding those injured and admitted.
This includes providing assistive devices, smartphones, and airtime for those who lost their phones, along with three months of food and one year’s rent for individuals in extreme conditions.
“Our Foundations are here to support the people, especially during emergencies. We are pleased to provide structured support to hospitals for infrastructure improvement and patient recovery,” stated Ndegwa.
Dr. Evanson Kamuri, CEO of Kenyatta Hospital, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the positive impact on those seeking medical assistance.
Safaricom’s efforts extend beyond Nairobi.
The company has allocated an additional Sh12.5 million for similar initiatives across the country.
This includes organizing medical camps in affected areas, starting with Githurai on July 6, 2024, and followed by Rongai.
These camps are part of a broader strategy to provide immediate healthcare support to communities hit hardest by the recent protests.
The protests, sparked by public disapproval of the Finance Bill 2024, have led to significant unrest and violence in major cities like Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Kisumu.
Long-Term Vision and #GenZforGenZ Initiative
Looking ahead, Safaricom’s long-term vision involves mobilizing its Gen Z employees and other like-minded organizations under the #GenZforGenZ initiative.
This initiative will see volunteer squads leading community outreaches, clean-ups, and medical camps.
Additionally, Safaricom aims to execute community programs through the M-PESA and Safaricom Foundations, with a heightened focus on Gen Z.
This includes providing TVET scholarships, economic empowerment through the Ndoto Zetu program, and agribusiness opportunities via the Wezesha Agri Program.
The initiative will also offer business training and micro-loans in 13 counties, starting with Nakuru, Nairobi, Kajiado, and Migori.
Moreover, Safaricom plans to support mental health through strategic partnerships and complimentary counseling services.
