The Inspiring Story Behind PayAngel: How One Man’s Vision Transformed Money Transfers for the African Diaspora

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – A few years back in London’s Canary Wharf, Jones Amegbor, now the CEO of PayAngel, found himself grappling with a familiar frustration faced by many in the African diaspora—how to send money home safely and swiftly.

Working in one of the world’s busiest financial districts, it puzzled him that, despite the technological advancements all around, sending money to his loved ones in Africa remained time-consuming, expensive, and unreliable.

At that time, many Africans living abroad resorted to informal methods like asking travelers to hand-carry cash to family members, a practice that was not only risky but often led to losses.

Inspired by the need for a better solution, Amegbor envisioned a new way—a way to cut out middlemen, prevent losses, and ensure the money arrived securely within minutes, not days.

In an interview with Kris Britton on the IDL Podcast, Joseph Lamptey, PayAngel’s Director of Growth and Strategy, revealed how Amegbor’s vision came to life.

Lamptey explained that PayAngel was created out of a deep desire to solve real problems for Africans living abroad.

The aim was not just to make sending money faster, but also to make it secure, free, and community-centric.

PayAngel was developed with three key goals: to provide a fast, secure medium for money transfers from continents like North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia to Africa; to eliminate third-party handling in transactions, ensuring direct and safe delivery; and to reduce transaction costs, even offering free transfers, making it a financially empowering option.

Africans living abroad have long battled high transaction fees, currency compliance issues, and lengthy delays.

PayAngel came to the rescue, providing a seamless experience and tackling these hurdles head-on.

As its name suggests, PayAngel became a guardian angel for Africans, offering a trusted platform that valued convenience over profits.

“Unlike many fintech companies,” Lamptey shared, “our focus is on customer satisfaction and solving real-life problems, not maximizing profits.”

Licensed by the United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), PayAngel adheres to strict international financial regulations, giving users peace of mind that their transactions are secure and compliant.
