NAIROBI, Kenya – The Party of National Unity (PNU) has announced its intention to exit the Azimio coalition, following the recent move by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to secure cabinet positions within President William Ruto’s administration.
PNU leader Peter Munya revealed that the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) will meet this Thursday to deliberate on its future with the Azimio coalition.
The decision comes in the wake of ODM’s controversial decision to join the government, a move Munya argues undermines the role of opposition parties.
“ODM’s decision to integrate into the government is a clear departure from our shared opposition stance. If ODM wants to be part of the government, PNU must reassess its position to continue effectively advocating for the Kenyan people,” Munya said.
He emphasized the need for clarity in political roles, noting that the constitution mandates distinct government and opposition factions.
Munya criticized ODM’s dual position, suggesting that it creates confusion and blurs the lines between governance and opposition.
He urged coalition partners to make their political intentions clear to avoid ambiguity in their roles.
This development follows Narc Kenya’s recent withdrawal from the Azimio coalition.
The party, led by acting secretary general Asha Bashir, formally notified the coalition of its exit last Thursday, citing “prevailing political developments” as the reason for their departure.
Narc Kenya’s withdrawal was particularly surprising given recent assurances from its leader, Martha Karua, who had expressed confidence in her relationship with ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Despite these assurances, Karua has opted to distance herself from the coalition, advocating instead for a robust opposition to hold the Kenya Kwanza government accountable.
“We are committed to strengthening the opposition to ensure that the current administration delivers on its promises,” Karua stated, underlining her party’s stance on remaining outside the government framework.
