Former Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) CEO Nana Gecaga has revealed that she stepped away from corporate leadership and relocated to the United Kingdom with her children.
In a candid Instagram post, Nana addressed growing questions about her absence from Kenya’s corporate scene.
“A lot of you have been asking: ‘Nana, where did you go?’” she began, before explaining that she did not disappear but rather transitioned.
According to her statement, the shift began in 2022, when she started slowing down her corporate commitments. By 2024, she made what she described as “one of the biggest decisions” of her life: moving to the UK with her boys.
For years, Nana Gecaga was known as a powerhouse in Kenya’s business and tourism sector. As CEO of KICC, she operated in high-level boardrooms, managed large teams, and led strategic deals within one of the country’s most prominent institutions.
But in her recent reflection, she made it clear that her priorities had shifted.
“I stepped away from boardrooms, leadership titles, deal-making, and the fast corporate lane… and stepped fully into motherhood,” she wrote.
The move to the UK in 2024 marked a physical and emotional transition. Nana relocated with her children, embracing a more hands-on parenting role.
She described her current life in detail: doing school runs every morning, cooking dinner, cheering loudly at sports matches, applying Band-Aids, making midnight hospital runs, and talking her boys to sleep.
“Before, that space was filled by teams, schedules, staff, and structure because my career demanded it. Today, presence demands me,” she explained.
Despite stepping away from leadership roles, Nana emphasized that her professional identity still exists but simply taken a back seat.
“Corporate Nana hasn’t disappeared, she’s just taken the back seat while Motherhood Nana drives this season,” she wrote.
Nana Gecaga built a respected career in corporate leadership, particularly during her time at KICC, where she became a recognizable figure in Kenya’s tourism and conference sector.
Beyond KICC, Nana has been involved in various strategic initiatives, corporate boards, and leadership roles that showcased her ability to manage large teams and complex projects.
Her contributions to Kenya’s corporate and tourism sectors remain influential and widely respected.
She ends her reflection with simple but powerful words:
“I never left. I was living. Growing. Mothering. Becoming.
