KenGen Boosts Kenya’s Green Energy with New Solar Project

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) is taking a significant step towards a greener future by adding 42.5MW of solar energy in the Seven Forks area.

This project, set to be completed in 28 months, aligns with Kenya’s ambitious plan to generate all its power from renewable sources by 2030.

The solar project, implemented in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD), will provide a much-needed boost to Kenya’s renewable energy portfolio.

“France is keen on partnering with Kenya in the deployment of renewable energy to stem climate change for which Kenya has shown its prowess,” said AFD Country Director, Bertrand Willocquet.

The collaboration not only emphasizes the strong bilateral relations between Kenya and France but also showcases the shared commitment to sustainable energy.

The new solar capacity will complement hydroelectric generation during the day, conserving water for night-time electricity production.

This is especially crucial during drought periods, helping to stabilize power costs for Kenyans.

According to Principal Secretary, State Department for Energy, Alex Wachira, the project will “provide affordable, reliable, clean energy, create employment opportunities, and engage the community through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).”

KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Peter Njenga, described the partnership as timely.

He emphasized that the company is committed to scaling up its renewable energy capacity, pushing Kenya closer to a 100pc green energy transition.

This project is a part of KenGen’s broader strategy to enhance its renewable energy infrastructure which includes significant investments in geothermal energy.

With the support of international partners like France, Kenya is not only advancing its energy infrastructure but also setting a benchmark for sustainable development in Africa.
