NAIROBI, Kenya- In a bid to foster transformative growth and reduce poverty, Kenya and China are strengthening their partnership on several development projects set to benefit millions.
During a recent meeting at State House, Nairobi, President William Ruto discussed the collaborative projects and strategic goals with Mr. Li Xi, a prominent member of China’s Communist Party Central Committee.
The President underscored the projects’ potential to drive Kenya’s economic transformation agenda, create jobs, and bring forth tangible outcomes for communities across Kenya.
One of the high-priority initiatives under discussion is the extension of Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network, a project that could dramatically boost regional connectivity.
Talks are progressing on SGR phases 2B, from Naivasha to Kisumu, and 2C, from Kisumu to Malaba. Additionally, President Ruto noted that discussions surrounding the Rironi-Mau Summit Road project have reached advanced stages.
“Swift project implementation will create jobs, especially for our youth and women, aligning with our Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda,” President Ruto emphasized.
Beyond transport, Kenya and China are also working on projects like the Nairobi Intelligent Transport System and the Bosto Dam Water Project, which will play a significant role in enhancing water access and urban mobility in Kenya.
Kenya is also keen on expanding Chinese private-sector investment in high-growth areas, including renewable energy, e-mobility, healthcare, and agriculture.
President Ruto encouraged China to facilitate cooperation between Kenyan and Chinese businesses, particularly in sectors like hospitality, which is essential for Nairobi’s vision of becoming a leading convention hub.
Moreover, the President welcomed Chinese involvement in initiatives such as the Galana Kulalu Food Security Project, affordable housing, and the creative economy, highlighting their potential for positive social impact and economic resilience.
This comes at a pivotal moment as Kenya seeks to harness diverse investments for national growth and sustainability.
As a strong supporter of the Belt and Road Initiative, Kenya is committed to advancing this partnership in Africa and endorsing the One China Policy.
President Ruto lauded China’s recent hosting of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, which has set a new trajectory for China-Africa relations.
President Ruto further expressed Kenya’s aspirations on the global stage, seeking China’s backing for its bid to join BRICS and for its candidate in the upcoming African Union Commission election.
He also voiced concerns over the proposed relocation of UN agencies from Nairobi, particularly the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a move he argues contradicts the UN’s principle of procedural fairness.
President Ruto appealed to China to support Nairobi as the host city for the Plastics Convention, reinforcing its status as a leader in environmental governance.
Additionally, he called for collaboration with China on peace and security initiatives across East and Central Africa, as well as institutional reforms within the African Union.
Mr. Li, in his remarks, reaffirmed China’s commitment to Kenya’s Vision 2030, pledging support for quality education, job creation, and environmental protection.
He emphasized that China remains dedicated to implementing the agreements established during the recent FOCAC Summit.
Kenya and China’s deepening collaboration reflects a shared vision for growth, modernization, and mutual prosperity.
By combining resources and expertise, the two nations are setting a precedent for South-South cooperation that prioritizes economic progress, infrastructure development, and environmental stewardship.
Through these initiatives, Kenya and China are not only building infrastructure but also laying the groundwork for an inclusive and resilient future.
