NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya and Germany have reaffirmed their defence and security cooperation following a high-level visit to the Humanitarian Peace Support School (HPSS).
Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya on January 21, 2026 hosted Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Johann Wadephul, and his delegation at the facility.
The delegation included German Ambassador to Kenya Sebastian Groth and Ambassador Gesa Brautigam, the Deputy Director General for Sub-Saharan Africa.
Tuya praised Germany for its long-standing support for Kenya’s peace, security, and development agenda, describing the bilateral relationship as strong and mutually beneficial.
She singled out Germany’s role in strengthening peace support training, particularly through the HPSS Counter–Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) Training Complex commissioned in April 2025.
The facility has already trained significant numbers of personnel and is enhancing Kenya’s and the region’s capacity to respond to modern security threats in peace support operations.
Tuya said the investment has strengthened the Kenya Defence Forces’ operational readiness and reinforced regional stability.
The visit highlighted Germany’s continued commitment to improving Kenya’s defence training capabilities as security challenges in the region evolve.
During the engagement, the German delegation received a briefing on the integration of HPSS within the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA).
The briefing focused on the school’s role in peace support operations, with particular emphasis on Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) training.
The delegation also toured the C-IED Training Complex to assess its operational capacity and training programmes.
Senior military officials attended the visit, including International Peace Support Training Centre Director Major General Charles Mwazighe and HPSS Commandant Brigadier Cleophas Mundiu.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Kenya Defence Forces were also present.
The engagement reinforced Kenya’s position as a regional hub for peace support training and underscored Germany’s role as a key security partner in East Africa.
