Kenya Meteorological Department Warns of Persistent Rainfall Across the Country

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya’s Meteorological Department (Met) has issued a weather forecast indicating that rainfall will persist across several regions of the country from Tuesday, April 8, to Monday, April 14, 2025.

The forecast predicts isolated heavy rainfall events, with significant rainfall expected in various parts of the country.

According to Met, the Central Highlands, Western, North-western, and North-eastern regions are likely to experience heavy rainfall, particularly in isolated areas.

This is expected to continue throughout the forecast period, with certain regions facing morning rains, afternoon showers, and occasional thunderstorms.

In addition, the coastal, northeastern, and northwestern regions are expected to experience high daytime temperatures, exceeding 30°C.

On the other hand, the Central Highlands and Central Rift Valley will experience lower night-time temperatures, dipping below 10°C in some areas.

Regional Breakdown:

  • Central Highlands and Central Rift Valley: The region will experience morning rains, followed by afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Night-time showers are expected over a few places.
  • Western Kenya and Lake Victoria Basin: Counties such as Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, and Busia will experience morning rains, followed by afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms.
  • Rift Valley: This includes counties like Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, and Elgeyo-Marakwet, which will see morning rains, afternoon showers, and thunderstorms. There will also be night-time showers in some areas.
  • Northwestern Kenya (Turkana and Samburu): The forecast calls for morning rains, followed by afternoon and night showers with thunderstorms, spreading occasionally across several areas.
  • Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi): The forecast includes cloudy mornings with light rain over a few places, followed by sunny intervals. Afternoon and night showers with thunderstorms are likely to spread across the region.
  • North-Eastern Kenya (Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo): The region will experience morning rains, followed by afternoon and night showers with thunderstorms.
  • Southeastern Lowlands: This includes counties like Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta, where sunny intervals are expected in the morning, with afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms affecting a few places.
  • Coastal Region: Counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and coastal parts of Tana River will experience morning, afternoon, and night rains over a few places, occasionally spreading to several areas.

Met has advised residents across the affected regions to stay informed and prepared for changing weather conditions.

Local authorities have been urged to be vigilant, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
