NAIROBI — The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has published an extensive addendum to the Orange Book, listing all approved Curriculum Support Materials (CSMs) for Grade 10 learners under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The addendum covers materials across multiple learning pathways, including Arts & Sports, Social Sciences, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), Applied Sciences, and Technical Studies, providing guidance for both learners and teachers.
In the Arts & Sports Pathway, Grade 10 students will access learner’s books and teacher guides in Music and Dance, Theatre and Film, Fine Arts, Sports and Recreation, and Physical Education. Key titles include Hummingbird Music and Dance, Mentor Music and Dance, and KLB Excelling Music and Dance, alongside their corresponding teacher guides. Theatre and Film learners will use Champion Theatre & Film and Distinction Theatre and Film, while Fine Arts selections feature Hummingbird Fine Arts and Front Row Fine Arts. Physical Education books include Hummingbird Physical Education, with teacher guides accompanying each title.
The Social Sciences Pathway spans English, Literature, and Kiswahili. English learners will use titles such as Moran Skills in English, KLB Excelling in English, and Storymoja English, all with matching teacher guides. Literature is represented by Dreams Denied by James Karuga. Kiswahili learners will access seven approved sets including Moran Kiswahili Chanana, Oxford Kiswahili Fasaha, and Kielekezi cha Kiswahili, all with guides for teachers.
For STEM subjects, the addendum lists comprehensive Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and General Science textbooks and teacher guides from publishers such as Spotlight, Moran, Longhorn, KLB, and Mentor.
The Applied Sciences Pathway includes Agriculture, Computer Studies, and Home Science, with approved books like Hatching Plant Life Agriculture, Modern Technology Computer Studies, and Mentor Home Science, alongside teachers’ guides.
Technical Studies materials cover Agribusiness, Building & Construction, Electricity, Metalwork, Power Mechanics, Woodwork, Aviation, Media Technology, and Marine & Fisheries Technology, featuring titles from KLB, Mentor, Moran, MTP, Dedan Kimathi, Booklyst, and Storymoja. Each subject is accompanied by the relevant teacher guides to ensure effective delivery.
The KICD addendum serves as a crucial guide for schools, teachers, and learners, ensuring that Grade 10 students under the CBC have access to high-quality, approved resources across all learning pathways, promoting consistent, competency-based education across Kenya.
