NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto has announced a landmark cooperation deal between the national government and the Nairobi County Government, aimed at improving safety, infrastructure, and urban services in the capital city.
Speaking at the signing event, President Ruto said the national government has tasked Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen with developing a framework for a Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit within 60 days.
The move is intended to enhance security for residents, visitors, and investors.
The President emphasized that the cooperation builds on existing initiatives rather than starting from scratch.
“Our cooperation is not beginning today. Today we are amplifying what we already started,” he said.
The agreement includes a comprehensive Sh80 billion investment package to deliver measurable improvements across Nairobi, covering infrastructure, security, and urban services.
“There comes a time when we must pull together. This is not an occasion for us to throw titles. It is the time when we should hold hands together so that we can take charge of our city,” President Ruto said.
He highlighted the importance of Nairobi’s image for Kenya’s international perception.
“Many people who visit Kenya get their experience from Nairobi. Therefore, the impression we give out of the city of Nairobi is the impression the international community has of Kenya. The package we are discussing here today is a package of Sh80 billion,” he said.
President Ruto added, “It is correct, and it is right for us to do what we are doing,” underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring Nairobi is safe, modern, and investor-friendly.
