NAIROBI, Kenya– Kenya is set to strengthen its position as East Africa’s regional trade and logistics hub following the imminent launch of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension from Narok to Kisumu and onward to Malaba.
President William Ruto met with Song Hailiang, Chairman of China Communications Construction Company, at State House, Nairobi, ahead of Thursday’s and Saturday’s launches, emphasizing the transformative potential of the railway for Western Kenya.
The extension is expected to unlock economic opportunities by linking Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the Port of Mombasa.

It will also reduce road congestion by shifting bulk cargo to rail, lowering transport costs, saving time, and improving safety on Kenya’s highways.
The meeting was also attended by Chen Zhong, Vice-President of China Communications Construction Company, and Du Fei, Chairman of China Road and Bridge Corporation.
