“Stop Over-Feeding on Carcasses”: Havi’s Festive Diet Advice Divides Kenyans

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Nairobi-based lawyer Nelson Havi has stirred an online debate after advising Kenyans to swap meat for fruits and vegetables during the festive season.

In a social media post that quickly went viral, Havi attributed his lean physique to his dietary choices, noting that he rarely consumes meat.

“Stop over-feeding on carcasses over the festive season, and asking me why I do not have a public opinion (toad tummy),” Havi wrote.

He added that his preference for fruits and vegetables has helped him avoid the protruding belly often associated with middle age.

Havi also drew an unusual analogy, asking: “Have you ever seen an obese chimpanzee? We just eat fruits and vegetables.”

The post was accompanied by a photo of Havi outdoors at what appeared to be his rural home in western Kenya, seated before a table laden with grapes, dragon fruit, pineapple slices, apples, strawberries, and a glass of fresh juice.

The post quickly attracted thousands of reactions, comments, and shares, but not all were supportive. Many social media users defended meat consumption, particularly during the festive season.

“Have you ever seen an obese lion, cheetah or a hyena? They are all lean and muscular! Meat is good for you,” one user countered.

Others raised economic considerations, noting that for many Kenyans, Christmas is one of the few times they can afford meat.

The debate also drew humorous and culturally nuanced responses. One commenter quipped: “Over-eating on fruits is the new flex,” while another joked about Havi’s omission of imondo (chicken gizzard), a festive delicacy in western Kenya.

The discussion touches a deep cultural chord, as the festive season in Kenya is synonymous with the aroma of roasting meat and the preparations of traditional meals that begin days in advance.

Chicken, goat, and sometimes cattle meat are central to celebrations, with mbuzi choma often serving as the highlight of family gatherings.
