NAIROBI, Kenya — Three people were killed on Tuesday evening after a Kenya Bus Service (KBS) bus collided with a stalled lorry along the Yaya–Kawangware Road in Nairobi, police have confirmed.
The accident occurred in the Bangladesh area, near the busy Kawangware–Yaya junction, leaving several other passengers injured.
According to officers at Kilimani Police Station, where the incident was reported, the KBS bus rammed into the stationary lorry from behind, resulting in multiple casualties.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the lorry had been parked on that section of the road since midday without any warning signs or reflective devices to alert oncoming motorists.
Police said the absence of reflectors or hazard markings may have contributed to the crash, particularly given the heavy traffic and reduced visibility in the area during evening hours.
Several injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, while three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The bodies were later moved to the mortuary pending identification and post-mortem examinations.
Police have launched investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident, including whether the bus driver was speeding or failed to keep a safe distance, and whether the lorry owner breached road safety regulations.
Officers also urged motorists to exercise heightened caution, especially around stalled or slow-moving vehicles on busy urban roads.
The Yaya–Kawangware Road is a major commuter route linking Nairobi’s western suburbs to the city centre and has previously been flagged by traffic police as a high-risk corridor due to congestion, stalled vehicles, and poor adherence to road safety rules.
