GARISSA, Kenya — The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to visit Hulugho Primary School in Garissa County following the killing of a teacher in a suspected Al-Shabaab attack that has renewed concerns over the safety of educators in insecurity-prone areas.
In a statement, TSC identified the slain teacher as Stephen Vundi Musili, who was killed during the early-morning attack on Monday, January 26. A local chief was also shot dead in the same incident.
The commission said Musili’s body has been flown to Nairobi and preserved at Chiromo Funeral Home pending further burial arrangements.
“The Commission is working closely with the family of the teacher to ensure they are accorded the necessary support to guarantee a dignified send-off,” said the TSC Acting Secretary.
According to TSC, the planned visit to Hulugho Primary School is aimed at assessing the security situation and determining whether other teachers stationed at the school are safe.
The commission reiterated that the safety and welfare of teachers, particularly those serving in high-risk regions, remains a top priority.
TSC said it is working closely with the national government and security agencies to enhance the protection of learning institutions.
The Commission also said it will provide psychosocial support to Musili’s colleagues and engage education stakeholders on measures to ensure schools in the region can continue operating safely.
The latest attack has once again highlighted the risks faced by non-local teachers in northern Kenya, where repeated militant assaults have in the past led to school closures and the withdrawal of staff.
Police have since launched investigations into the suspected terror attack, with security agencies heightening patrols in Hulugho and surrounding areas as efforts to track down the assailants continue.
