Ferdinand Omanyala Withdraws from Diamond League Final Due to Injury Concerns

Kenya’s 100m record holder, Ferdinand Omanyala, will not compete in the 2025 Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich after confirming his withdrawal due to injury.

The 29-year-old sprinter cited pain in his hip, iliopsoas, and gluteal muscles, which has persisted over recent weeks, forcing him to prioritize recovery ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this year.

Omanyala had secured a spot in the Zurich final after finishing the season ranked fifth overall in the Diamond League 100m standings with 20 points.

His decision to withdraw comes as a disappointment to Kenyan fans and athletics followers across the continent, as he had been expected to be one of Africa’s strongest contenders in the sprint final.

In his statement, Omanyala emphasized the importance of long-term health over short-term competition:“Due to recent hip, iliopsoas, and gluteal pain experienced over the past few weeks, I regret to inform you that I will be unable to participate in the Diamond League Finals 2025. I am optimistic about my recovery and anticipate being fully fit for Tokyo.”

Kenya’s broader athletics contingent will continue to feature in Zurich, particularly in middle-distance and distance events, but the men’s 100m final will lack Kenyan presence.

Omanyala remains Kenya’s most prominent sprinter, breaking barriers for a country historically recognized for dominance in middle and long-distance running.

The upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo remain Omanyala’s primary focus. His decision to skip Zurich allows him time to undergo treatment, rehabilitation, and conditioning with the aim of returning to peak form.

The Tokyo championships represent an opportunity to compete against the very best, including American and European sprinters, on the biggest stage outside the Olympic Games. A fully fit return will be crucial in re-establishing him as a contender for global medals.

With attention now shifting to Tokyo, Omanyala remains a key figure in global sprinting. His recovery and return to form will be closely monitored as Kenya continues its quest to make an impact beyond distance running.
