The government has designated six official fan zones in Nairobi ahead of Harambee Stars’ decisive African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group A match against Zambia this Sunday, August 17.
The move comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) slashed the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani’s capacity by 40 per cent—from 45,000 to 27,000—over security concerns.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya directed the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to set up alternative viewing areas to accommodate fans without tickets and ease congestion at the stadium.
“I have directed FKF to establish CHAN 2024 fan zones across Nairobi to help ease congestion at Kasarani during the Harambee Stars match,” Mvurya said, adding that the sites were chosen to offer fans “a near-similar experience to being inside the stadium.”
The zones, confirmed after a meeting with security chiefs led by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, will be at:
- Uhuru Park
- Lucky Summer (Ngomongo area, behind Kasarani Stadium)
- Dandora Stadium
- Utalii (Stima Club)
- Jacaranda Grounds
- Kibera DC Grounds
The top-of-the-table clash will determine whether Kenya advances as Group A leaders, finishes second, or risks elimination.
Harambee Stars lead with seven points, but must win to secure a quarter-final spot without relying on other results.
The announcement follows a tense tournament build-up, with CAF already fining Kenya over security breaches at earlier matches and warning that hosting rights for the knockout stages could be at risk if crowd control lapses persist.
