Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has appointed veteran Kenyan actor Ken Ambani as the county’s new Advisor on Creative Arts, a move aimed at strengthening and restructuring the creative sector at the Coast.

The appointment was announced on January 8, 2026, alongside other advisory roles approved by the Mombasa County Public Service Board to support the Office of the Governor.

Ambani’s role places him at the center of the county’s efforts to develop policies and programs that support artists, cultural practitioners, and creative entrepreneurs.

According to Governor Nassir, the creative arts portfolio is a critical component of Mombasa’s socio-economic development, given the county’s rich cultural heritage and youthful population.

The governor said the appointment seeks to tap into professional expertise from within the industry to guide government interventions in the sector.

Ken Ambani brings decades of experience in Kenya’s film and television industry, making him one of the country’s most recognisable and respected actors.

He rose to prominence in the 1990s and early 2000s through popular television dramas, including Tausi, where he gained national recognition.

Over the years, Ambani has featured in several acclaimed local and international productions such as Makutano Junction, Shuga, A Better Life, Noose of Gold, and Selina.

Beyond acting, Ambani has been involved in media, communications, and marketing roles. His career spans acting, voice work, brand communications, and advocacy for the growth of Kenya’s creative industries.

The advisory role is expected to focus on policy guidance, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning for the creative arts sector in Mombasa.

This includes film, television, music, theatre, visual arts, fashion, and cultural events.

Mombasa has long been regarded as a cultural hub, shaped by Swahili heritage, coastal traditions, and a vibrant contemporary arts scene.

However, despite its cultural significance, the creative industry in the county has faced persistent challenges, including limited funding, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of structured support systems for artists.

The county government believes that appointing a seasoned industry professional will help bridge the gap between policy and practice.

The governor has emphasized that the advisory positions are not ceremonial but are intended to provide technical input and strategic direction.

The appointment has been welcomed by sections of the creative community, who see it as a positive step toward formal recognition of the arts as a serious economic sector.
