NAIROBI, Kenya – Shadrack Maluki, the long-serving president of the Kenya Judo Federation (KJF), has been elected as the new President of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), ushering in a new era of leadership in the country’s Olympic movement.
Maluki clinched victory in a tight race, garnering 15 votes to edge out former NOC-K Secretary General Francis Mutuku, who received 12 votes.
The election marks the end of Paul Tergat’s tenure, whose two terms at the helm have now concluded.
Clean Sweep for ‘New Dawn’ Camp
Maluki’s win was part of a clean sweep by his “New Dawn Fresh NOC-K” slate, which also saw two of his key allies elected to top leadership roles.
Barnabas Korir, Executive Member of Athletics Kenya and Youth Director at the federation, was elected First Deputy President, also securing 15 votes against Anthony Ombok’s 12.
Korir has been an outspoken advocate for youth sports development and a key strategist in Maluki’s campaign.
The position of Second Deputy President went to Nahashon Randiek, a close ally of Maluki and a respected sports administrator.
Randiek, who edged out Kenya Amateur Wrestling Association President Anthony Kariuki with 14 votes, is expected to bring administrative rigor to the new NOC-K leadership.
The End of the Tergat Era
The election marks a generational shift at the top of Kenyan Olympic sports.
Outgoing president Paul Tergat, a former world marathon record holder, served two terms since taking office in 2017.
His tenure saw improvements in athlete welfare and the launch of programs like the Kenya Beach Games, but also faced criticism over transparency and governance.
Tergat did not seek re-election, opening the door for a contested leadership transition that now firmly places the reins in Maluki’s hands.
