Kenya’s Sports Ministry Moves to Support Angella Okutoyi After Sponsorship Appeal

The Ministry of Sports has officially responded to the recent public appeal by Kenyan tennis sensation Angella Okutoyi for financial backing, announcing a collaborative effort with the Tennis Kenya Federation to ensure the rising star is properly supported as she prepares for upcoming international competition.

Okutoyi stirred national conversation earlier this week when she publicly disclosed that she lacks personal sponsorship to cover the high costs of her international tennis career.

In a heartfelt video message, she outlined the financial struggles she faces — from travel and accommodation to equipment and coaching fees — and called on corporate entities, individuals and sporting stakeholders to step in with support.

On Friday, January 16, 2026, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed that the Ministry had taken up Okutoyi’s case and was already engaging relevant sporting bodies to explore how best to support her.

According to Mvurya, the government’s approach focuses on working closely with the Tennis Kenya Federation to ensure that Okutoyi has the necessary financial and logistical backing ahead of her next scheduled tournament in May.

“Tennis has the power to open doors, transform lives, and inspire our youth,” Mvurya said in a statement.

“I have received Angella Okutoyi’s appeal and spoken to the Kenya Tennis Federation leadership. Angella is a remarkable Kenyan talent whose journey continues to inspire many young athletes across the country.”

Mvurya explained that the Ministry and the Tennis Kenya Federation are jointly considering immediate support measures that would position Okutoyi to compete effectively and focus on her development without the constant worry over finances.

“As a ministry, we will be engaging the Tennis Federation of Kenya to explore immediate support options and ensure she is well prepared and financially supported ahead of her next tournament in May,” Mvurya added.

While the specifics of the support package are still being finalised, this collaboration is expected to include financial assistance for travel and tournament participation, potentially supplemented by logistical support for her coaching team and training programme.

At just 21 years old, Angella Okutoyi has already achieved milestones that have brought unprecedented recognition to Kenyan tennis.

In 2022, she became the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title, capturing the girls’ doubles crown at Wimbledon.

She has also won gold in women’s singles at the African Games and continues to compete in international circuits with notable results.

Her recent performance trajectory has seen her climb in the global rankings, bolstered by strong showings in ITF tournaments.

However, despite her international achievements, Okutoyi has struggled to secure consistent sponsorship, illustrating the gap between talent and financial support in sports that lack mainstream attention and commercial endorsement.
